Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure that rejuvenates the eyes by addressing drooping eyelids and puffiness beneath the eyes. Aging, genetics, and environmental factors can cause the eyelids to stretch and muscles to weaken over time, leading to a tired or aged appearance. Eyelid surgery delicately corrects loose eyelid skin and displaced fat in the upper and/or lower eyelids to restore a smoother, more alert, and youthful appearance.
Every patient’s eyes and concerns are unique. Dr. Ryan Constantine works closely with each individual to develop a surgical plan that enhances their natural features while maintaining balance and harmony with the rest of the face. His goal is to achieve results that look natural—not overdone—so patients feel confident and comfortable in their appearance.
Who Is a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery may be right for you if you:
- Have drooping upper eyelids that make you appear tired or older
- Notice sagging skin around the eyes that affects their natural contour
- Experience puffiness or bags beneath the eyes
- Have difficulty seeing due to excess upper eyelid skin
- Want to restore a brighter, more rested appearance to the eyes
Ideal candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.
Benefits of Eyelid Surgery
Benefits of eyelid surgery can include:
- Rejuvenate the eyes: Remove excess skin and fat for a more refreshed, alert appearance.
- Improve sightlines: Eliminate drooping upper eyelid skin that obstructs vision.
- Smooth under-eye bags: Reduce puffiness and creases for a smoother lower lid contour.
- Restore facial harmony: Brighten the eyes while maintaining balance with surrounding features.
- Provide lasting results: With healthy habits and good skincare, results can last for many years.
About the Procedure
Eyelid surgery may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s needs and preferences. The procedure typically takes one to two hours.
For upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Constantine removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids to improve drooping and restore definition. For lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Constantine focuses on reducing puffiness, smoothing wrinkles, and tightening skin beneath the eyes. In either case, incisions are placed in natural creases or along the lash line to make scars virtually invisible.
Both upper and lower procedures may be performed together for comprehensive rejuvenation. After surgery, most patients return home the same day to begin their recovery.
Recovery and Healing
Recovery from eyelid surgery typically progresses as follows:
- First week: Mild swelling, bruising, and tightness around the eyes are common and subside with rest, cold compresses, and medication.
- One to two weeks: Most patients can return to work and light activities; makeup can usually be worn to conceal residual bruising.
- Three to four weeks: Swelling continues to resolve, and the eyelids feel more natural and comfortable.
- Two to three months: Final results become visible as the sensitive tissues around the eyes settle.
Dr. Constantine provides detailed post-operative instructions and follow-up care to support optimal healing and long-lasting results.
