Breast Revision
Breast revision surgery is a procedure performed to replace or remove breast implants after a previous breast augmentation or reconstruction surgery. Over time, breast implants and the surrounding tissues can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or implant-related complications. In some cases, a patient’s aesthetic goals may evolve. Breast revision addresses these concerns by restoring comfort, improving breast appearance, and creating results that better align with the patient’s current needs.
Every woman’s body, history, and goals are unique. Dr. Ryan Constantine will work closely with you to understand your concerns, evaluate your existing implants or surgical results, and develop a personalized treatment plan. His goal is to achieve results that look natural, complement your proportions, and feel right for you.
Who Is a Candidate for Breast Revision?
Breast revision may be right for you if you:
- Are unhappy with the size, shape, or position of your implants
- Have experienced changes in your breasts over time after augmentation
- Notice discomfort, tightness, or firmness in the breasts
- Have concerns about implant rupture or other implant-related complications
- Want to replace or upgrade to newer or different implants
- Prefer to remove your implants and restore your natural breast contour
Ideal candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about what revision surgery can achieve.
Benefits of Breast Revision
While breast implants can last for many years, some patients can benefit greatly from revision surgery. Here are some of the benefits of breast revision:
- Improve appearance: Refine shape, symmetry, and overall breast contour
- Update implants: Replace older implants with a different size, type, or profile
- Restore comfort: Address implant-related issues that have caused tightness, pain, or distortion (such as capsular contracture)
- Remove damaged implants: Correct concerns such as implant rupture or implant malposition
- Align results with current goals: Help patients achieve results that better fit their current preferences and lifestyle
About the Procedure
Breast revision surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is tailored to the patient’s existing implants, anatomy, and goals. Depending on the reason for revision, surgery may involve removing and replacing implants, removing implants without replacement, releasing or removing scar tissue, repositioning implants, or reshaping the surrounding breast tissue. In some cases, a breast lift may also be recommended to improve breast shape and position. Whenever possible, Dr. Constantine uses existing incision lines to minimize additional scarring. Most patients return home the same day to begin recovery.
Common Reasons for Breast Revision
Breast revision may be recommended for a number of reasons, both cosmetic and medical. One common reason is capsular contracture: a condition in which the scar tissue around the implant tightens and causes the breast to feel firm, look distorted, or become uncomfortable. Another reason is implant rupture or deflation, which may change the shape or feel of the breast and require removal or replacement of the damaged implant.
Some patients pursue breast revision because they want a different implant size, type, or profile, or they wish to upgrade their implant choice after a time. Others develop concerns related to implant malposition, rippling, asymmetry, or changes in the surrounding breast tissue over time. Breast revision can also be appropriate for women who decide they no longer want implants and would prefer implant removal with or without additional reshaping procedures (e.g. breast lift surgery).
Surgical Techniques
Breast revision surgery can involve different techniques depending on the nature of the concern being addressed:
- Implant Exchange: Removes the existing implants and replaces them with new implants of a different size, type, or profile
- Implant Removal: Removes the implants without replacing them; may be combined with a breast lift to reshape the breasts
- Capsulectomy or Capsulotomy: Treats capsular contracture by removing or releasing scar tissue around the implant
- Implant Repositioning: Adjusts the implant pocket to improve breast symmetry, implant placement, or breast contour
- Breast Lift with Revision: Lifts and reshapes the breasts when skin stretching or sagging is also present
Dr. Constantine will recommend the technique (or combination of techniques) that best addresses your concerns and supports a natural, balanced result.
Recovery and Healing
Recovery from breast revision typically goes as follows:
- First week: Patients may experience soreness, swelling, and tightness. These can be managed with medication and rest.
- One to two weeks: Most patients are recovered enough to return to light activities and work (depending on job type).
- Four to six weeks: Patients may gradually return to exercise and more active routines.
- Two to six months: As swelling resolves and tissues settle, the final results will become visible.
Dr. Constantine provides detailed post-operative instructions and close follow-up care to support safe healing and long-lasting results.
